Carmelo Varela is a New York-born director and Photographer rooted in culture and human connection. Raised in Brooklyn and Queens by immigrant parents, he grew up with a street camera in hand, documenting the people and places around him. His path into filmmaking began with documentary at DCTV Downtown Community Television Center, where he developed a visual instinct for finding the story before the shot.
Today, Varela brings that same documentary sensibility to commercial and narrative work, creating films and campaigns that feel cinematic, authentic, and human. Known to friends and collaborators as “Melo”, he approaches every project with curiosity, intention, and a deep love for the craft.
